Frank Gehry (sp?)
Phillip Stark
Herb Lublind
David Carson
Neville Brody
Chip Kidd
Jonathan Barnbrook
Alan Hatch

Books:
Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works
Smile in the Mind
Barnbrook Bible
Handwritten
Book One
Typographic Systems

Magazines:
Computer Arts
Creative Review

People also might wish to look up an american television program called PixelPerfect, it is a television show for photoshop and illustrator tutorials some may find useful.

Others wishing to learn illustrator or photoshop from a more basic level may wish to try

www.pixel2life.com

Those who are interested in researching logotypes for the project may wish to look into three books:
Logo Lounge
Logo Lounge 2
Dos Logos

These are more like...catalogues of logo's that have been done, but invaluable for referencing nonetheless.

Also look up more on

Rule of Thirds
The Golden Section
The Visual Triangle (a brilliant example of this at
work is in the movie poster for Star Wars: A new Hope and also in Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith).

Hope that helps, kat.

i think this task is really difficult. i wish we only had 1 thing to concentrate on at a time. can't switch off my brain and make it think about this project, then coffee republic again

hello all.
I'm starting to get stressed already! I'm trying to do some research on the 1920's but all i keep getting is American stuff. Would prefer to get info on both US and British 1920's and can't seem to find anything. Anyone found or know of good website/books etc please?

Unknown said...

Hi everyone. That's really helpful James. Makes more sense than my notes.

I've been looking into the 70's a bit, but have only found stuff on feminism, sex, drugs and music. My product could end up going along a very sinister path :)

James Random said...

People researching the 50's might want to and buy/rent Grease.

James Random said...

Also don't forget Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first woman prime minister in 1979, tammy :)

James Random said...

And how could I forget, lol. The US landed on the moon in 72.

Unknown said...

Cheers James, what year did you get?

James Random said...

I got the 1950's, hence why I'm just about to venture out to buy Grease. :)

help! can you please tell me what is my product with this project? (poster project) help!

James Random said...

It just occurred to me. Those researching the 1950's will want to watch the movie 'The Day The Earth Stood Still'. It was released in 1951 and was significant at the time because of its reception, mainly regarding cold war paranoia and the views on Communist Sympathisers.
It has also been [this year] voted as the fifth best science fiction movie ever made.

I'm off all week but Graham is in on two days - email him at graham.burton@ncn.ac.uk

He's never on Facebook - not quite as hip as he makes out. ;op

Okay - great to see you all asking advice and that Robin (James) has been helping you out.

50s - definitely look at old British Noir and US Beatniks and the Beat Generation. Jack Kerouac is a must. He's been used in a contemporary slant with Gap Jeans - his novel On the Road was is seminal classic.

Keep asking away. I'll add comments when I can.

Rich.

Yui,

I don't have the list at home, it's at College. If you wish I can give you a new one now to save time. How about iPod 1920s?

I'm thinking a glasses or monical device. A case maybe? A telescope?

The Eye Pod.

I don't mind people changing grammar and acronyms if it fits with the times, ie the internet during the 1900s would have been much more obviously worded. The Internal Network, or the Electrical Web. I'm trying to get you to play with words - to evolve this idea based on your research.

Don't stress, don't think of too many ideas. Just absorb, ready for when we get back.

Most importantly, have fun!

Rich.

Hi richard been looking to find the artist who influenced both Rand and bass only reference seems to be Nagey of the bauhaus school is this the guy?

Anonymous said...

is coffee republic supposed to have research with it? or just experiments and designs? trying to get it done so i can concentrate on rear view mirror.

James Random said...

Coffee Republic requires both research an a sketchbook. Don't forget your cultural references too.

James Random said...

Anthony, I always thought it was the artist Zamyatin who influenced Paul Rand.
I could be wrong though.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Dave where can i find details on zamyatins influence on rand

Rupert said...

i'm a little confused by this project
do we need to come up with the final design or is the main emphasis on the research

James Random said...

You need a final design to in poster format.

You need

*A poster (no smaller than a4)
*An adshell (The posters that go in the side of a bus stop)

and finally you need a T-side (ads on the side of a bus) or a billboard poster. (though not as large for obvious reasons).

design@ncn said...

EVERY PROJECT REQUIRES RESEARCH. Your final designs are then 'developed' and hopefully inspired by your findings.

RESEARCH is GOD. Remember that.

Oh...and power corrupts. lol

As for Bass' influence - I'm thinking of someone more well known in the artist world.

I'm expecting Robin's sketchbook to be especially strong just based on all the helpful advice he's been giving all of you.

Rich.

Hi everyone, check out Modculture.co.uk great site for sixties stuff, posters, design, culture etc.

James Random said...

though do note that 'mod' (meaning modernist) began at around 1957, but wasn't really popular until about 1965

iFISIGN said...

hey robin/ james you have good knowledge of the past, this must be a break through project for you.

design@ncn said...

Okay everyone -

I must say this is one of the most valued arguments I have seen so far on the blog and is a good example of every one voicing their own opinions about any 'problems' they have.

Please bear in mind that every single comment that is added on here comes directly to my email, so in the morning I get a stream of informative and often entertaining comments we can all use.

I agree with everything my students say on here - you all know we are very proud of you so far and try and help you as much as we possibly can. So, any student that appears to be condescending in any way is an insult to us all as 'learners'.

There are a number of matters that have been brought to my attention about this student and a DISCIPLINARY is in action based on what I have heard outside of College and the blog. I will look into suspending the student until the matter is resolved.

My advice is to ignore the problem and often it will go away. Except if it's a design problem of course.

Richard.

i just have a couple of questions about my final design in terms of my project, because i'm doing the 1930's bus stops didin't have the advertising on the side and buses only had strips and not T shaped layouts.
i was therefore wondering if all i would have to do was make a portrait design a landscape design and the a single strip for the bus?
just wondering if i need to bare in mind the fact it will still be 1930 or if i just need to fill the brief
thanks

design@ncn said...

Precisely that, Rupert. Just adapt to how they advertised then - if it was just a strip on the bus, then so be it.

Richard.
